Pilot's Life Story:
Walter Nowotny was born on Feb 2, 1920 in the
small German town of Büchel. While growing up he grew a passion for
fast cars. He craved the excitement and challenge of driving the machine
to the limits of it's capabilities. When war broke out with the invasion
of Poland he wanted to do his part to serve and defend the Fatherland.
And of course the Luftwaffe was the place he wanted to be. He couldn't
resist the temptation of being a fighter pilot. The lure of matching his
flying skills against another fighter pilot in a life or death battle was
too much. He enlisted in October 1939 and after completing pilot training
he joined JG26 in France during the last stages of the Battle of Britain.
Although the learning curve against the British was steep, the natural
talents he had polished during his years of racing cars paid off huge!!
He had lightning reflexes, an aggresive spirit and was uncanny in his ability
to stay cool during combat. However this assignment didn't last long as
he was transferred to JG52 in preparation for Operation Barbarossa. His
kill tally quickly rose against the inferior Soviet aircraft and before
long he was regarded as one of the rising stars of the Luftwaffe. Even
later as newer and more capable Soviet aircraft became available, his skills
had developed to the point where no Soviet pilot could match him. Soon
he was briefed about and given the opportunity to join a highly secret
fighter unit. He had heard rumors of JZG23, and believed it was composed
of only the very best pilots the Luftwaffe had produced. Once again he
couldn't turn down the lure of adventure and challenge an assignment such
as this offered. He quickly accepted the offer and joined the most feared
and mysterious fighter squadrons in Luftwaffe history. |
